DESIGN - ROXY PAINE

American artist Roxy Paine (b. 1966) has created a 130-foot-long by 45-foot-wide stainless-steel sculpture, especially for the Museum’s Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden. Giving viewers the sense of being immersed in the midst of a cataclysmic force of nature, Maelstrom (2009) is Paine’s largest and most ambitious work to date.

The latest in a diverse body of work, this sculpture is one of the artist’s Dendroids based on systems such as vascular networks, tree roots, industrial piping, and fungal mycelia. Set against Central Park and its architectural backdrop, the installation explores the interplay between the natural world and the built environment amid nature’s inherently chaotic processes.

DESIGN - J. CHEW PORCELAIN

Jamie Chew is transforming the modern dining table with her unique take on traditional Chinese porcelain. Influenced by her Malaysian homeland, Chew has lived in Paris, Beijing, Geneva and Shanghai, fueling her inspiration for her ‘east meets west’ Limoges porcelain.

Her ‘tradition with a twist’ cultural patterns come in sublime shades of red, green, blue, brown, pink and lavender. Each plate, cup and saucer is handcrafted, with all designs applied by hand. Each of the five patterns features a dinner plate, salad plate, bread and butter plate, teacup and saucer or you can purchase a five place setting. From the traditional Arabesque pattern, available in earthy Arabian Spice, red Hibiscus or Bluemarine, the bold floral and circular Lotus Pavillion pattern in turquoise or tangerine, to the playful Shangrila pattern with a butterfly, lotus flowers, fish or toad in apple green or ecru, Chew’s designs incorporate influences from India, Arab and Egyptian cultures.

MARIA PERGAY

Maria Pergay’s steel furniture is clean and strong with a touch of whimsical femininity.

Best known for her collection of stainless steel furniture presented at a Paris show in 1968, Pergay’s work was never mass-produced although, she developed a following among collectors such as fashion designer Pierre Cardin and the Saudi Royal Family.

Pergay first made a name for herself in the 1950's and 1960's creating modern decorative objects such as cigarette cases for high-profile clientele such as Hermès and Christian Dior.

PEDRO MUÑOZ - BOOT BEAUTIFUL

Iconic western boot maker and owner of Stallion boots, Pedro Muñoz, still practices today what is considered to be a rare form of boot making - by hand. Pedro and his master craftsman use the highest quality leathers, beads, stones and precious materials from around the world to create these wearable works of art. It takes 22 hours alone to create his basic stallion boot!

Naturally, Muñoz has been sought after by high profile fashion designers including Ralph Lauren, Dolce and Gabbana and Tommy Hilfiger and has been shown on the runways of Paris, Milan and New York.

Muñoz's Stallion boots are sold in exclusive stores around the world including Colette in Paris, Bergdorf Goodman in New York an Trois Pommes in St. Moritz and Zurich.
